Halloween Zombie Makeup Tutorial DIY

Halloween is right around the corner and I couldn't be more excited. Around here, we stick to budget-friendly Halloween decorations, crafts, and you guessed it: Costumes!

This year, my son decided that he wanted to be a zombie. I was pretty relieved, because it is incredibly easy to create a zombie costume. For the clothes, you can just cut up and shred some old clothes to create a "tattered and torn" look. As for the makeup, well, I've got that covered too.

I've experimented with all kinds of Halloween makeup over the years and zombie makeup has been one of the easiest. This step-by-step tutorial will show you exactly how to get yourself (or your kiddo) looking creepy just in time for Halloween!

You will need:

• Toilet paper
• White school glue
• Skin-colored foundation
• Makeup brushes
• Black face paint
• Fake blood (click for a DIY edible recipe)
• Gray face paint

Before "putting your face on," you'll need to peel apart individual sheets of toilet paper (if the brand is more than one-ply). Once they're all peeled apart, go ahead and tear them into strips and other little pieces.

Before applying glue directly to your face, you'll want to test a small area for irritation first. If there is a reaction, you may be better off using liquid latex.

If you're in the clear, apply glue to your face (wherever you want the "wounds"). It is very important that you're using white school glue, as it is easy to remove with soap and water.

Slap a strip of toilet paper on top of the glue. The toilet paper will become your "rotting flesh."

Add glue to the edges of the toilet paper. This will make it easier to work with. Apply a little petroleum jelly to your fingertips for less sticking.

Start to bunch up the toilet paper on your face. Add more glue as needed. The toilet paper will start to bunch up (and probably tear), but that's perfectly fine. It'll add more dimension.

Continue applying toilet paper to your face with glue and hope that nobody knocks on your door.

While there are many different ways to go about creating fake skin with toilet paper, the one I like the most is creating a "center" without toilet paper so that I can eventually fill it in with black to make it a gaping wound.

Continue applying toilet paper. You can cover your entire face, you can do one side, or you can place toilet paper in patches. It's all up to you.

Let the toilet paper dry for about 10 minutes or so. You'll feel it start to get tight on your skin.

Next, apply skin-colored foundation to your toilet paper. Pat it in and blend it as well as possible.

Keep going until all of the toilet paper on your face is skin-colored.

Fill in the "center" areas with black face paint.

It will look something like this.

You can use tools, such as the bottom of a makeup brush, to "slice" into the toilet paper for effect.

Don't forget to fill the slices with black!

Next, dab a little fake blood around the wounds.

Then, add gray face paint around the eyes, nose, and anywhere else that you want it.

Now it's time to go crazy with the blood. Being that it's a zombie costume, I thought I'd make it look like I just had a meal.

Finally, add a bit more blood to the wounds and do some extra blending.

Bam! You've become a zombie.

After applying my makeup, I worked up quite an appetite. Did you?
