Sandalwood Essential Oil: Brief History, Facts, & Scential Health Review

As each day passes, I become more and more immersed in the world of holistic medicine and all- natural remedies. I love the idea of treating mind, body, and soul when you're trying to cure an illness. In my opinion, it only makes sense. For example, stress makes you susceptible to illness. As a result, you should try to heal every part of your body and spirit—not just the sickness itself—in order to prevent the likelihood of getting sick in the future.

Essential oils have become an important part of my life. I have started recommending several to friends and family and have seen their faces light up when they tell me how great they work. It only further motivates me to research further and learn as much as I can about nature's medicine.

Recently, I had the opportunity to review yet another Scential Health essential oil. This time, the oil that I'll be reviewing is Sandalwood (Indian). If you haven't read up on some of my past reviews, feel free to visit the essential oils section on the blog.

Before I dive into the review, I would like to go over some information about Sandalwood. Below, I will cover a brief history, some useful facts, and some of the oil's benefits.

Sandalwood Extraction Methods

Sandalwood oil is extracted using the steam distillation method. Pieces of wood are taken from aged Sandalwood trees (typically between 40 and 80 years old, although the older, the better) and then distilled to create an aromatic oil, one that has been worshiped for centuries.

It seems to be agreed upon that Indian Sandalwood (Santalum Album) is the preferred oil. There are, of course, two more varieties, but Indian still seems to be the prized variety due to it's high oil content and desirable aromatic profile.

History of Sandalwood

Sandalwood has been an important oil in many civilizations and religions throughout the world. In Hindu, sandalwood is considered to be a sacred plant, one that they use in religious ceremonies and rituals including:

  • Birth anointment
  • Offerings to gods and goddesses
  • Marriage decorations
  • Embalming
  • Cremation

Sandalwood has also been used for medicinal purposes throughout history, as an incense, oil, and even simply the wood itself.

Benefits of Sandalwood Essential Oil

There are several different benefits of sandalwood essential oil, including it's ability to treat urinary tract and kidney infections. It may also help in soothing a sore throat, chest infection, or bronchitis.

Sandalwood is also known to be an anti-inflammatory and may be applied topically. If you're sensitive to essential oils, you may opt to dilute it. Dilution with jojoba oil is recommended. You can apply it to the skin to relieve rashes, inflammation, itching, and to soothe acne, heal eczema, and to fade scar tissue.

For mental and spiritual purposes, you can use it as a calming agent. It may be used as a massage oil to soothe tense muscles and can help calm you in times of stress. Alternatively, it may be used as an aphrodisiac.

Needless to say, this oil is quite versatile and has several different capabilities.

Scential Health Sandalwood Essential Oil Review

My past three reviews of Scential Health Essential Oils haven't been particularly positive. However, I am excited to say that I am impressed with the sandalwood essential oil.

As with all of Scential Health's Essential Oils, the sandalwood comes in a small, glass, amber bottle. You'll receive 15 mL of oil that may be dispensed via the Euro-Style dropper cap. The cap is rubber to seal in the aromatic properties of the oil, while also allowing for easy dispensing.

The smell of the oil is intoxicating. It is a true combination of woodsy, spicy, and earthy, with a hint of subtle sweetness, almost like that of vanilla. When combined with my skin's natural oils, it becomes more cedar-like, very rich and deep.

The fragrance is not harsh by any means, but I do feel that when using as a perfume, you may want to stick to applying it during the colder seasons, as it is a bit heavy for warmer temperatures.

So far, I have had the chance to blend it with other oils to get my home smelling lovely. I haven't had an ailment for which to treat it with, but I have been wafting it at night to induce sleep when my mind is on overdrive. So far, so good.

I do feel that this oil has potentially restored my faith in Scential Health's Essential Oils. I would definitely recommend this one. If you're interested, grab your sandalwood essential oil now!
