Verbena Essential Oil Benefits + Scential Health Review

Lippia is a genus of flowering plants in the verbena family. Lippia javanica, specifically, is a woody shrub that grows up to two meters and produces white and yellow flowers in clusters. The oil has been known to be used medicinally for hundreds of years.

History of Verbena Oil

Some groups and civilizations used verbena leaves to create infusions that they would drink for medicinal purposes. The Tswana used a verbena tree concoction to treat scabies and lice infestations. It is said that verbena must be highly concentrated to be used for scabies and head lice.

Benefits of Verbena Oil

Below are some of the potential benefits of verbena oil:

  • Sore throat gargle
  • Treat abscesses
  • Repel insects
  • Treat skin rashes

Unfortunately, I do not recommend using Scential Health's Verbena Oil for any of the above purposes, for reasons that I will outline in my review below.

Scential Health Review

According to several essential oil gurus that I know, verbena oil typically smells of mint and vanilla. Some strains are more floral and/or peppery, depending on the type of verbena.

Scential Health's Verbena Oil comes in a small 15mL glass amber bottle with a Euro-style dropper cap. The cap is rubber sealed and allows for easy dispensing. The overall design of the bottle is nice, just like all of Scential Health's Essential Oils.

Unfortunately, the Verbena Essential Oil from Scential Health didn't smell like any of the descriptions I have heard and/or read about. In fact, it had an overwhelming synthetic fragrance, with very strong citrus top notes and an underlying "rubber" scent that I felt go down my throat as I wafted the oil. My sister, whom I let smell the oil, remarked that it was reminiscent of "Lemon Heads," a favorite artificial candy among movie-goers.

With that said, I cannot recommend this particular Verbena Essential Oil. My experience with Scential Health's Essential Oils has been pretty "hit or miss" lately, which is unfortunate. I hope to receive more information about the distillation processes as well as more about the true purity of their essential oils.

Stay tuned!
