I promised that I'd write up some Halloween tutorials and here I am to deliver! Today's Halloween project is this super simple "Eat, Drink and Be Scary" sign. For me, this sign was free because I had everything that I needed on hand.
This sign can be used as a decoration for your kitchen or set out near your refreshments table at your Halloween party. You can also spray it with weather-resistant paint and use it outdoors.
What you'll need:
- Piece of cardboard or thin wood (size depends on preference)
- Orange paint
- Black paint
- Sponge brush or paint brush
- Fake spiders
- Fake spider web
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
To start the project, I used this old piece of heavy-duty cardboard. If you're using your sign outdoors, I recommend a thin piece of wood, sprayed with a weather-resistant coating after the project is finished.
Mix up a little bit of orange paint with a small amount of black.
Use your sponge brush or paint brush to blend the colors together, leaving streaks of black. It adds a little more "texture" to the board.
I did end up having to add a little more black to the paint as I went along. Allow the paint to dry.
Next, you're going to want to sketch out where your letters are going to go. I highly recommend measuring and using a straight edge so that you don't have slanted letters. I, however, just free-handed mine. Luckily, it turned out okay.
Also, if you're not very good at drawing/writing, you can use stencils.
Once you've drawn in pencil where your letters will go, you'll want to fill them in with black paint. I used tempera paint. I should have used acrylic because it just wasn't dark enough for my taste. Alternatively, you can use a Sharpie. I feel that a Sharpie would give you more control as you write versus painting.
I didn't like how pale the letters were so I went over it again with the tempera paint.
After looking at the sign, I decided it was too far too bland and boring. I wanted to dress it up a little.
A quick search around my Halloween supplies bag turned up these plastic spider rings...
So, I just snipped off the ring part...
...so that they would lie flat.
...and attached it to the sign.
I took the spiders and attached them to the web and other areas of the sign with a hot glue gun. Voila! The sign was finished!
Seriously, this is such an easy project and it can be done with the help of your children, especially if you're using tempera paint like I did.
