Parabens, phthalates, and talc, oh my!
It seems that in today's world, people are finally waking up to the truth—that some of the chemicals found in our everyday products are doing more harm than good.
By now, you've probably heard of the big name baby brand that came under fire for its questionable ingredients. It's no surprise that parents all over the world are taking heed to this revelation and are now paying careful attention to the potentially dangerous ingredients used in baby care products.
This was a minor full-body rash that she experienced—the others were not pretty. |
First, he said it was contact dermatitis. Next, it was an allergy. Finally, he concluded that it must be a "virus leaving the body." As a mother, I was frustrated and fed up. After receiving no real answers, I took matters into my own hands.
I switched to all-natural ingredients for her skincare routine. She hasn't broken out in a rash since.
Whether or not her rashes could be attributed to the baby care products I was using, I can't say. What I can say with certainty, however, is that after making the switch, her recurring rashes had disappeared.

Ify Chuke-Nwobi, JD, mother of four and cancer survivor, was in a similar situation. She realized that harsh ingredients in baby care products were negatively affecting her children. Like me, she decided to take charge. Check out this excerpt from her website, where she now sells all-natural baby care products.
For years, I searched for a toxic-free skincare regimen for myself and my babies but found none. When I tried to find natural lotions made from natural ingredients that worked, I found a plethora of toxins and chemicals in most store bought baby oils, lotions, and shampoos. These products left my kids' skin dry, causing eczema.
Chuke-Nwobi, JD became passionate about providing consumers with natural alternatives to baby care products and started her line, Mummy's Miracle.
Mummy's Miracle started when Ify started creating her own body creams and oils in her kitchen. After implementing Moringa Oil into her products, the difference in her skin and the skin of her children was remarkable.
Their skin glowed, radiated and retained its smoothness, softness, and suppleness.
After having discovered the healing powers of Moringa Oil, she knew she had to spread the word. She eventually teamed up with a chemist and thus her line, "Mummy's Miracle," was born.
The line features products including baby wash & shampoo, ointments, and talc-free baby powder, as well as products for mom including an all-natural nipple balm and even a stretch mark oil. This line is a godsend for mothers and fathers all over the world looking for all-natural alternatives to the harsh chemical-laden products on the market.
Mummy's Miracle is about transparency. This is a company that knows that making the switch to all-natural baby products isn't as easy as it seems. You can't just go to the store, grab any product labeled "natural" and assume that you're in the clear. Oh no. That's why this company lists all of their ingredients on their products and on their website. There is even a number right on the website that you can call if you have any questions about the products in the line.
Thanks to Ify Chuke-Nwobi, JD and Mummy's Miracle, I had the opportunity to try some of these products first-hand.
Mummy's Miracle All-Natural Moringa Baby Shampoo & Body Wash
Mummy's Miracle All Natural Moringa Baby Shampoo & Body Wash comes in an eight ounce pump bottle. The formula is a gentle, mild cleanser that's tear-free and utilizes the following ingredients to keep your skin and your children's skin fresh and clean:
- Moringa Oil
- Glycerin
- Honey Extract
- White Tea Extract
- Chamomile Extract
This wash is gentle enough to use on infants, but it's also great for use on toddlers, children, and even adults with sensitive skin. It's free of allergens, including gluten, soy, oat, dairy, and nuts, and it's a Vegan product, so you can feel secure in knowing that you're using an ethical product.
When I first received the body wash, I tested it out on my face first and I love it! The formula itself is a little thin, but not water-thin, as it doesn't run out of your hands like other natural products on the market.
It lathers very well and it smells lovely. Because it's tear-free, I didn't have to worry about burning my eyes when washing under my cheeks. It has a sweet, floral fragrance and the formula left my skin feeling rejuvenated and refreshed, without any redness.
After having tested it out, I pumped about a teaspoon into my daughter's bath water to see how well it bubbled—and it bubbled quite well. The base of the soap is a Moringa Oil based soap. My daughter is big on bubble baths. If it's a bath without bubbles, it's not a bath at all, in her opinion. Needless to say, this was a plus for us.
My daughter's hair is rather long, and it took two pumps to get her hair lathered. She, too, loved the way it smelled. Because it's a gentle cleanser, it took a little elbow-grease to get the marker off of her arm that she had used to give herself a "tattoo" earlier in the day, but this is to be expected when you're not using super strong, potentially harmful ingredients. It did come off, all the same, just with a little more effort.
After her bath, I jumped in the shower to try it out for myself. It left my hair feeling clean, but because my hair is so dry, I still felt a need for a conditioner. For my daughter's already soft hair, it worked like a charm.
Mummy's Miracle All-Natural Moringa Baby Ointment
This little "Miracle in a Tub" as I like to call it, is Mummy's Miracle All Natural Moringa Baby Ointment. The 6.2 ounce tub contains a creamy goodness that has so many uses.
This stuff is amazing. Like, really amazing. It's nice and thick, but creamy once it warms in your hands. It has a floral fragrance that's sweet and subtle, much like the baby wash.
We use it to moisturize our legs, knees, hands, and elbows. In the winter, our skin tends to get extremely dry—and this is no exaggeration. There have literally been days when we've constantly given each other other static shocks because of how dry the air and our skin is. Ah, Ohio winters!
So, this ointment is a wonderful addition to our skincare routine. It works great as a hand balm, to soothe chafing, and can even be applied to your cheeks to prevent wind-burn if you're headed out on a cold, windy day.
Of course, it's actual purpose is for use on your baby's bum to soothe diaper rash and to create a barrier from wetness—but that doesn't stop me from using it for any other body part that I think needs a good moisturizer! Any cracked, dry, or flaky skin will benefit from this little tub of baby ointment.
We've used quite a bit of this product since it's arrival on our doorstep.
It's formulated with Moringa Oil extracts, Shea butter, and Vitamins A & D (from Cod Liver Oil), so you can even use it on minor cuts and scrapes. This is definitely a must-have product for adults and children alike. It's absolutely my favorite product of the three that we received.
Mummy's Miracle All-Natural Moringa Baby Powder
If you're making the switch to all-natural baby products, perhaps one of the first things to switch is your baby powder.
Talcum powder, as many of us now know, has recently been under fire due to the claim that it increases the risk of ovarian cancer. According to the American Cancer Society:
Based on limited evidence from human studies of a link to ovarian cancer, IARC classifies the perineal (genital) use of talc-based body powder as "possibly carcinogenic to humans."
As if ovarian cancer isn't bad enough, some doctors warn that infants and children can inhale talc particles which could potentially lead to chemical pneumonia.
Northwell Health physician, Dr. Jacqueline Moline, speaking of talc baby powder, states:
One of the tenets of occupational and environmental medicine is that if there's a safer product, you substitute it because that eliminates the risk. In this case, the substitute is cornstarch.
Corn starch is the main ingredient in Mummy's Miracle All Natural Moringa Baby Powder. This gentle baby powder combines corn starch, rice starch, aloe juice, Moringa Oil, eucalyptus, and lavender to create a safer alternative to talc-based baby powder.
And this baby powder can be used for more than your baby's bottom! This cornstarch-based baby powder can be used in between the legs to prevent chaffing, on the face to absorb oil from your skin, and even in your hair to absorb grease in between washing.
Before I sent the powder to my sisters for use on her daughter (my 18-month-old niece), I used it to remove the oily residue near my scalp, as well as to absorb some of the oily patches on my cheeks. I used to use baby powder for the same purposes, but once I realized the dangers of the talc, I stopped. I never even thought about using cornstarch. This cornstarch baby powder works just as well as talc-based powder, but it's safer. Win!
My sister's experience with Mummy's Miracle All-Natural Moringa Baby Powder:
So, I used the powder on Madison last night and it worked just like regular baby powder, but I feel better knowing that the ingredients in this baby powder are all-natural and safe. The smell of the powder is soft and clean and it leaves her skin and mine feeling silky soft.
Mummy's Miracle also has a Medicated All-Natural Moringa Baby Powder that's cooling and gentle on baby's skin.
Mummy's Miracle is not just limited to ointment, baby wash, and powder. They have a full line of products including all-natural baby care bundles.
What's even more awesome about Mummy's Miracle is that you can sign up for a subscription and save on your purchases. That way, when you run out, you know that there's more on the way
Overall, I'm highly impressed with the quality of the Mummy's Miracle products that I received. This company provides all-natural alternatives to harsh chemical-laden products. Their products are free of toxins, sulfates, and parabens always. They never test on animals and the products are sustainably-produced.
If you're looking for an all-natural baby product alternative, this is a great place to start!
