It's officially summer break, which means it's time for summer fun, summer fashion, and the summer sense of community that we all know and love! This season, we've planned a trip to Kings Island and we also intend to make a few trips up to the lake.
And while we love doing these things, most of our summer days will be spent at home having fun in the sun within our own community. We have a grill, a sprinkler, a picnic table, squirt guns, and lots of yard space, so it's our preferred way of spending time together! Our children enjoy riding their bikes, playing with sidewalk chalk, blowing bubbles, getting soaked with the squirt guns, and catching fireflies once the sun goes down.
My summers as a child were spent in a very similar way. We would attend neighborhood cookouts with trusted friends and family, we'd swim at our local pool, and we'd ride our bikes through the town. When the sun would lower itself below the horizon, we'd clean out an old peanut butter jar, poke holes in the lid, and head outside to catch "lightning bugs."
Gymboree, the popular children's clothing company, has started a "Local Legends" campaign and I love the message behind it. There were so many people within the community that were "local legends" within the community when I was a growing up.
I remember a man that every kid in the area called "Pappaw." He would watch over us kids while we were out and about—and let our parents know if we were up to no good! The entire community mourned his passing. He was an integral part of our little town.
Another "local legend" was a sweet old woman who lived a few houses down. The neighborhood kids and I used to sit under her big maple tree on hot summer days. She never did mind. She used to offer us cold drinks and was always a friendly face. Sometimes I wonder if she knew how much of a difference she made in my life. The neighborhood children made a lot of memories around that big maple tree while drinking her cold lemonade or iced tea.
I want my children to be able to make similar memories and I hope to one day be considered a "local legend" within my community. There are so many ways to make a difference within your town. It can be something as simple as keeping a close eye on the children, offering drinks to those who are out doing yard work, refilling the children's squirt guns (or getting involved in the battle), or even just by being "the house" that they can go to when they want to sit in the grass and relax a little bit.
I also like to keep an eye out for my community and it's also safe to say that if we're grilling out and someone is hungry, they're more than welcome to come along! We love to help others and we know that "it takes a village" so we want to be an integral part of our community.
This summer, families and children all over are staying close to home and becoming local legends. Some families are hosting cookouts, others are having block parties, and some are just joining in the watergun fights with the kids.
