Hen in a Hurry: Food Subscription Service Review

Convenient dinner ideas are a godsend for busy moms. As a busy mom myself, I can attest to the fact that finding the time to prepare a delicious meal in between homeschooling, cleaning, blog work, and freelance writing is not easy.

Hen in a Hurry, a food subscription service, is here to help. Hen in a Hurry takes the guesswork out of dinner and makes putting together meal plans a breeze.

* Product and/or service provided for review without cost. As always, all opinions are my own. Please view my full disclosure.

I was recently given the opportunity to review Hen in a Hurry's meals. In this review, I have photographed each dish that I received, judged each dish on presentation, taste, and texture, and have included the ingredients list and nutrition facts.

What is Hen in a Hurry?

Hen in a Hurry is a food subscription service. After signing up, you'll be able to choose from several chef prepared meals and they'll be shipped directly to your door. All ingredients are clean, sustainably sourced, and responsibly raised. No waste. No prep. No preservatives. Just heat and enjoy!

There is no commitment — pause or cancel at any time.

I chose the following meals from Hen in a Hurry (I received the 4 Bulk Family Meals):
  • Grass Fed and Finished Beef Lasagna - with Glazed Carrots
  • Whole Wheat Pasta with Tomato Basil Sauce - with Squash Casserole
  • Sage and Turkey Stuffing - with Stewed Apples
  • Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo - with Fire Roasted Vegetables
I received four servings of each dish, for a total of 16 meals. It seems that I was accidentally sent two Sage and Turkey Stuffings and two Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo packages instead of their sides, but after contacting Hen in a Hurry, they had the Stewed Apples and Fire Roasted Vegetables sent out right away — excellent customer service!

Preparation

There are two different ways to prepare Hen in a Hurry meals. You needn't spend hours slaving over a hot stove — and you don't have to spend any time prepping! You can cook the meals in the microwave right in their containers or you can cook them in the oven (by removing the food from the containers and putting them in an oven-safe dish).

I've found that heating the food in the oven is best for a nice texture — but that's true for any food, not just Hen in a Hurry meals.

Cooking times vary and all instructions are included on each individual package.

Grass Fed and Finished Beef Lasagna with Glazed Carrots

The Grass Fed and Finished Lasagna came with a side dish of Glazed Carrots. One serving of each is about 430 calories, which is a typical dinner. I also served it with a spinach side salad.

Presentation

Despite having been vacuum-sealed and shipped across the states, the lasagna and carrots were both well-formed and both looked very appetizing. You can see the different layers of the lasagna, from the noodles to the ricotta cheese, and from the meat to the marinara.

Texture and Flavor

The lasagna was very good. The ricotta cheese, meat, and sauce came together very well.

The flavor of the glazed carrots was perfect — sweet, without sacrificing the natural carrot flavor. When cooked in the oven, the carrots have a better texture than if cooked in the microwave. I tested both cooking methods and much prefer the oven.

Nutrition & Ingredients Breakdown

Lasagna
Ingredients: Marinara Sauce, Ricotta Cheese, Lasagna Noodles (Flour, Egg), Parmesan Cheese, Onion, Ground Beef, Pork Sausage, Mozzarella, Salt, Black Pepper
Contains: Milk, Egg, Wheat

Grass Fed and Finished Beef Lasagna
Glazed Carrots
Ingredients: Carrots, Honey, Unsalted Butter, Lemon Juice, Parsley, Salt, Black Pepper

Glazed Carrots
This is a delicious and reasonably healthy meal in terms of caloric content. The simple ingredients are an added bonus.

Whole Wheat Pasta with Tomato Basil Sauce with Squash Casserole

The Whole Wheat Pasta with Tomato Basil Sauce came with a side of Squash Casserole. One serving of each is about 480 calories. Again, this is the caloric content of an average dinner.

Presentation

I wanted to add a little garnish and perhaps some Parmesan cheese, but I also wanted to photograph the food in all of its glory. In the photograph, you can tell that the noodles are well-formed and that there is a good sauce to noodle ratio.

The Squash Casserole had a beautiful difference in texture and color, so I loved the presentation of that dish.

Texture and Flavor

I was surprised that the spaghetti noodles were still "al dente" after heating it up in the microwave. The flavor was good. I did add a little salt, but that's only personal preference. That's another amazing thing about Hen in a Hurry meals: You can always season them however you'd like!

Like the glazed carrots, I preferred the Squash Casserole when cooked in the oven. The Squash Casserole is moist in the oven but not too moist. The almonds were still crunchy and the flavor was delicious. In fact, this was my favorite dish out of all the dishes I received.

Nutrition and Ingredients Breakdown

Whole Wheat Pasta with Tomato Basil Sauce
Ingredients: Marinara Sauce, Parmesan Cheese, Spaghetti (Flour, Egg), Basil, Salt
Contains: Milk, Egg, Wheat

Squash Casserole
Ingredients: Squash, Almonds, Heavy Cream, Onions, Egg, Water Chestnuts, Chickpeas, Mozzarella, Parmesan, Chives, Garlic Powder, Parsley, Sea Salt, Black Pepper
Contains: Milk, Egg, Almond

Squash Casserole
This meal is very filling and again, the Squash Casserole is really, really good.

Sage and Turkey Stuffing

The Sage and Turkey Stuffing comes with Stewed Apples. As soon as I receive the Stewed Apples, I'll add those to this review. One serving of Sage and Turkey Stuffing is about 300 calories. Seeing as this stuffing is designed to be a main dish, this is an average caloric content.

Presentation

The stuffing looks pretty darn good, all things considered. You can see the sage, pieces of celery, bread, and turkey.

Taste and Texture

I love stuffing. At first, I cooked a serving in the microwave and later, I cooked a serving in the oven. Again, the oven provides superior texture and flavor. Definitely cover the Sage and Turkey Stuffing when cooking in the oven to retain moisture.

The flavor of the dish was good — just like Grandma used to make for our Thanksgiving dinners.

Nutrition and Ingredients Breakdown

Sage and Turkey Stuffing
Ingredients: Chicken Stock, Turkey Breast, White Bread, Onion, Unsalted Butter, Heavy Cream, Celery, Egg, Parsley, Sage, Salt, Black Pepper
Contains: Milk, Egg, Wheat
Sage and Turkey Stuffing

This is a good meal. I bet it's even better with Stewed Apples!

Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo

One serving of Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo is 560 calories. This is a little high, but still on par for an average dinner. When ordering from Hen in a Hurry, the Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo comes with Fire Roasted Vegetables. As soon as I receive those, I'll include a review here. I can't wait to try them!

Presentation

I highly recommend cooking the Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo in the oven. The microwave dried it out a little bit and the noodles were no longer intact. After cooking the second dish in the oven however, the noodles were a bit more well-formed and there was plenty of sauce.

Taste and Texture

The ingredients for this are so simple — I love that. It makes me feel confident in what I'm eating and serving my family. The taste is good, although I did add a little salt. Again, that's just personal preference. Because Hen in a Hurry doesn't season too much, you're free to "dress up" the dish however you'd like. That's just one of many benefits.

Ingredients: Heavy Cream, Chicken, Fettuccine Pasta (Flour, Egg), Parmesan Cheese, Butter, Enriched Bleached Flour, Black Pepper, Garlic Powder
Contains: Milk, Egg, Wheat

Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo

The caloric content is a little high for my preference, but Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo is one of those dishes that I love to indulge in every once in awhile.
