Being blessed with wide calves means that regular boots just don't work for me. The average knee high boots have a calf circumference of around 15 inches — my calves are 17 inches around. That leaves me out when it comes to shopping among "regular" size boots.


Boots with a wider fit are a must have for women with wide calves, however, not all boots are treated equally. I have tried numerous wide calf styles from top brands so I know that not all boots fit the same. Some advertise as wide calf but maintain the average 15 inch circumference. That makes it frustrating for us wide calf ladies who love boots just as much as the next girl.

Because of the strange sizing discrepancies when it comes to boots (and pretty much all women's fashion), I've gone ahead and put together a list of some of the best wide calf and best extra wide calf boots. These are some of the highest rated wide calf boots on Amazon.

Dr. Scholl's Women's Poe Wide Calf Slouch Boot, $190

I love Dr. Scholl's wide calf boots. I've found that Dr. Scholl's tends to feature boots that are comfortable and stylish, so it's a win-win. This particular style is a wide calf slouch boot. Based on the reviews, it seems that the Dr. Scholl's Poe Wide Width fits up to 18 1/2 inch calves without bunching or slipping at the ankle. The boots are made of a synthetic fabric and have a 15 inch shaft from the arch. As with most Dr. Scholl's shoes, these have a memory foam cool fit insole. The leather wrapped stacked wedge heel and decorative buckle detail makes these a practical and stylish choice. These knee high boots run around $220 and according to the reviews, are worth every penny.

DREAM PAIRS Women's Knee High Hidden Wedge Wide Calf Boots, $40

DREAM PAIRS has a ton of wide calf boots but these were my favorite. These knee-high wide calf boots come in over 21 different colors/materials (suede and leather), so you can get a pair to match every outfit. Not to mention, they're extremely affordable with prices for each pair around $40. These wide calf boots feature a full length zipper closure, round toe, and a rubber sole. The approximate heel height is two inches and the shaft is about 17.5 inches. According to the reviews, the wide calf size is perfect for those with 17 inch calves (these would be perfect for me) with a little room to spare. The regular size appears to have a 16 inch circumference.

DREAM PAIRS Women's Knee High Wide Calf Riding Boots, $50

My second choice for DREAM PAIRS wide calf boots are these riding boots. There are a few different styles available including army-style, quilted, and buckled straps. The boots feature a rubber sole and faux fur lining to keep your feet warm and cozy. The heel measures approximately 1.25 inches and the shaft is 17.5 inches from the arch. The circumference of the wide calf is 16.5 inches BUT the reviews state that it fits calves up to 18 inches. After reading several dozen reviews and looking at photographs, I am confident that these will fit the wider calf gals out there. These are reasonably priced, with each pair costing around $50.

Journee Collection Women's Wide Calf Knee High Riding Boot, $50

To avoid confusion, know that this Journee brand is not the same Journey shoe store that you see in your local mall. Don't let that discourage you, however. The boots seem truly promising. These wide calf and extra wide calf knee high riding boots are available in several different colors including gray, tan, dark brown, ,cream, black, and wine. They feature ankle straps and a one inch heel. The wide calf circumference runs between 16.5 and 18 inches depending on shoe size. The extra wide calf sizes run from 17.5 to 20 inches. Some of the reviews highly recommend sizing up because the soles are apparently small. If you have wide feet, you may want to go a size and a half up. If you have extremely wide feet, you might want to choose a different brand. These faux leather boots are reasonably priced at around $50 per pair.

Room of Fashion Over The Knee Stretch Wide Calf Boots, $65

With over 450 reviews, the Room of Fashion Over The Knee Wide Calf Boots are incredibly popular and apparently, rightfully so. These boots feature a calf circumference of up to 20 inches, depending on size. I've included their size chart down below.

They are made of synthetic suede or leather and feature a rubber anti-slip sole with a cushioned insole. The shaft runs around 23-24 inches, which makes this a perfect wide calf over the knee boot. Oh, and did I mention that they only run around $65? The price and the reviews on this one make it readily apparent that these are a must have boot.

Tips for Buying Wide Calf Boots (That Actually Fit)

• Measure your calves. I recommend measuring your calves immediately before checking size charts on websites. If you can, have someone help you to make sure you're getting the widest part of your calves.
• Always check the size charts and the calf circumference. If no calf circumference is listed, then don't buy the boots! Beware of brands that advertise wide calf boots with no size chart or calf circumference listed. These boots often end up measuring around 15-16 inches. A 15-inch calf circumference is the standard on most boots.
• Read the reviews, especially when shopping online. While it's important to always check the size charts, don't rely solely on the size charts to make a final decision. Always read the reviews and always read the negative reviews. You'll want to know the problems that people are running into so that you can determine whether or not it's a problem you'll be able to deal with (for example, sometimes people complain about the narrow sole — some women have narrow feet and wouldn't mind this as much whereas others may need to size up).
• If you have extra wide calves, always go for boots that have a stretchy back. These backs allow more freedom of movement and won't cut off circulation in areas that other boots will. Don't make yourself suffer just for a nice pair of boots. There are boots out there that fit you! It's a matter of finding them!
