Moving house is both an exciting and stressful time. While house hunting for your dream property is hugely exciting, the practicalities of moving house are less so. Searching for a property to move into and selling your current home can be a time that’s filled with pressure, especially as you go through all the legal processes involved in the sale of your old home and the purchase of your new one.
If you are feeling the pressure and looking for ways to make the process of moving house and settling into your new home much more straightforward, then these tips should help you:
Relax
Relaxing may feel like the last thing that you want to do when you have a million and one thoughts flying around in your head, but taking time to stop and breathe can be a big help. If you are finding your house move overwhelming, taking some time out and taking a break from your worries can give you the headspace that you need. You may find it helpful to use mindfulness techniques to take your thoughts away from fretting about the future and focus your mind back on the present moment.Creating some space to be calm without being distracted by ‘what ifs’ can leave you more able to tackle any problems that surface with calmness and clarity.
Clear Out
Decluttering your home is a great way to prepare for your house move, both on a practical level and an emotional level. Going through your stuff and getting rid of your unwanted belongings is a useful way to prepare for your fresh start mentally. Of course, getting rid of your unwanted stuff also means that you don’t have as much to pack and move with you, so it means less hassle all round. A bonus of decluttering is that you may find things that you can sell, to help raise some extra cash, and of course you will get that feel-good buzz if you donate some of your belongings to charity too - so decluttering is definitely a win-win situation.Image Credit: Pixabay |
Box it Up
Once you have had a good clear out and parted company with all the things you no longer want or need, it’s time to start thinking about packing. Many people hate packing, because it takes a lot of effort, and is just so time-consuming. If spending your weekend packing cardboard boxes is your worst nightmare, then why not make it easy on yourself, by starting earlier and doing it bit by bit.Pick up some boxes and packing materials ready in advance such as wrap for fragile items and packing tape and you’re good to get started whenever you have a spare few minutes. Doing just 20 minutes a day, or committing to packing up one chest of drawers can soon set you well on your way to getting your house boxed up and ready to go. Of course, if you are starting early, then be sure only to pack the things that you won’t need before you move, there’s nothing worse than having to unpack all your boxes to find something before moving day. An excellent system to use is to start with items that have no practical purpose, such as ornaments and other decorative items in your home. Next, you may want to move onto your bookshelves, and start packing them up, unless of course, you are planning a marathon reading session before your house move!
