Face Washing 101: Method, Products, & More

Learning how to properly wash your face is important to a healthy skincare routine. Washing your face helps remove dirt, oil, makeup and other debris from the skin, cleansing it and reducing the risk of breakouts from clogged pores. Knowing how to wash your face and which products to use after washing will keep your skin looking beautiful.

Recently, I did a write-up on The Dos and Don'ts of Taking Care of Your Skin and shortly thereafter, I shared with you my skincare routine. In it, I detailed some of the products I've been using from Lexli Skincare. Those products will be featured in this post as well.

I recently started implementing Lexli's Cleansing Lotion into my skincare routine. It's a gentle facial cleanser that can be used multiple times a day. It helps prepare the skin for any products that you intend to use afterward. For me, that means my witch hazel toner, moisturizer, and eye cream. You can learn more about this product by reading my Lexli cleansing lotion review.

So, let's get into the steps for proper facial washing. It's actually quite simple.

  1. Wet your face.
  2. Apply your favorite facial cleanser. For dry skin, I highly recommend Lexli's Cleansing Lotion. For acne, you can opt for Lexli Acne Cleanser.
  3. Lather the facial cleanser onto your face using upward and outward strokes, being sure to get around the edges of the nose and the hair line. Be gentle around the eyes.
  4. Rinse the face. You can do this by cupping water in your hands and splashing it onto your face or you can use a soft, wet wash cloth to rinse the soap off.
  5. Pat dry.

And that's it — for washing anyway! After washing, you'll want to do a few extra steps to maintain your healthy glow.

The first is to use a toner. I prefer to use witch hazel. That's it. Some people swear by other toners and while I'm always open to trying new products, witch hazel is simple enough for me and it works. If you use essences or skin boosters, this would also be the time to use those.

Apply your eye cream after you've toned your skin and it's nice and dry. I use Lexli Revital-Eyes Rejuvenating Eye Cream. It's thick, it smells great, and it glide on smoothly and easily around that sensitive eye area.

Next, reach for any treatments, serums, or under eye pads. I don't currently use any treatments although I may implement a serum in the future for some stubborn dry patches.

Then, you can apply any facial masks or facial oils that you use. I use facial masks when I feel that my skin needs a pick-me-up.

Finally, use a moisturizer. This is when I pick up the Lexli Night Moisturizer (I use it day and night).

Once a week, I exfoliate my skin. I'm currently using AloeGlyC which is gentler than a chemical peel, but still leaves the skin looking soft and smooth.

Now that you know the basics of washing and the steps after washing your skin, tell me a little bit about your skincare routine. Do you follow the same steps above or do you do things a little differently? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
