Your Ultimate Autumn Skincare Routine: How to Keep Your Skin Glowing This Fall

There's no season quite like Autumn. The crisp, chilly air can feel rejuvenating after a sweltering and sticky summer. However, as the seasons become colder, humidity levels drop, which can lead to some not-so-rejuvenating side effects, like dry skin.

You can never over-stress the importance of a skincare routine, but your daily skincare habits become especially important as the weather changes.

Fortunately, when dry skin is caused by environmental factors, it's fairly easy to control. You can dry brush skin to remove the dead skin cells, take cooler baths or showers, and use products to help restore the moisture and maintain a protective barrier.

When choosing products for your Autumn skincare routine, it's critical that you select products that won't strip your body of its natural oils, as this could lead to more problems in the long run.

Choosing an Autumn Skincare Product

One of the most important parts of choosing a product for your fall skincare routine is to avoid ones that incorporate drying chemicals, like alcohol. Aloe is a great example of a skincare ingredient that helps skin retain moisture instead of stripping it, and pH-balanced products help maintain your body's natural acid barrier. Lexli Skincare products contain no alcohol, focusing instead on aloe-based and pH-balanced formulas.

What Skincare Products Do I Need?

To start your Autumn skincare routine, you'll need the following products:
  • Gentle Facial Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Exfoliant
  • Serum
  • Moisturizer
  • Eye Cream
  • Lip Balm
If you're a beginner at skincare, don't panic just yet! It sounds like a lot, but you don't have to use all of these products daily. Some are used on an as-needed basis, such as the exfoliant. Let's break things down with a little more detail.

Face Wash

Any gentle face-washing soap, cream, or foaming cleanser will do. However, when the moisture in the air is at an all-time low, Cleansing Lotions are a must-have. These cleansers glide on smoothly to remove any sweat, makeup, dirt, and debris. Some even double as a body wash!

How To Use: Simply wet the face with your hands or a wash cloth, pump the product once into your hands (or use a pea-sized amount if it's in a tube), and apply directly to the face using upward and outward motions. Once you've sufficiently covered the entire surface of the face and neck, rinse the cleanser with a clean, saturated wash cloth and pat-dry using a microfiber towel.

Toner

In the fall, sometimes washing your face just isn't enough, especially after hayrides and late-night bonfires. That's where toner comes in.

Toner is used to remove any debris or makeup that might be left behind after using a facial cleanser. It's also designed to soothe the skin. pH-balanced toners are your best friend, as they won't interfere with your skin's natural acidity.

How To Use: Toner is usually applied by pouring the product onto a cotton round, but many now come in convenient spray nozzles. Apply the product as directed, and then wipe off any excess using a cotton pad.

Exfoliant

Skin exfoliants are used to remove dead skin cells, revealing the radiant skin underneath. However, exfoliating too often can cause redness and skin irritation, negating your skincare efforts. Exfoliating everyday isn't necessary for everyone, nor is it recommended. Some prefer using exfoliating products once per week, whereas others may only use them once per month.

That said, there are some exfoliants gentle enough to be used daily, like AloeGlyC. Unlike apricot, walnut, or sugar scrubs which can cause microabrasions to the skin, AloeGlyC is not a mechanical exfoliant. It works similarly to a chemical peel, without the intense irritation.

How To Use: Mechanical exfoliants are not recommended. For chemical exfoliants, follow the directions on the product label. Many are designed to be left on the face without rinsing, and other products (serums and creams) may be placed directly over it.

Serums

Serums are excellent tools to have in your fall skincare routine because they help lock in moisture and prevent skin from drying out. Peptide serums are superior, as they help with wrinkles and fine lines. Even if you don't currently use a serum, you should definitely invest in one for the drier season.

How To Use: Use the product on your neck, forehead, the corners of the eyes, and on any fine lines or wrinkles. Pat it into these areas with a gentle finger tap.

Moisturizer

Moisturizing is as important as washing your face. If you're not regularly moisturizing, especially during the colder months, you can almost guarantee dry, flaky skin.

A regular daily moisturizer is an excellent choice, but selecting one designed for night is better. A Night Moisturizer can typically be used day or night, but some are specifically designed to prevent transepidermal water loss while you sleep.

How To Use: Apply the moisturizer to the skin using the fingers. Rub it in using gentle upward and outward circular motions until all of the product is absorbed. Don't forget the neck!

Eye Cream

The final step in any skincare routine should be an eye cream. You can't just apply any regular ol' moisturizer to the eye area. You need products designed for this delicate, sensitive skin. Revital-Eyes is a prime example of a quality eye cream that soothes, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, moisturizes, and reduces the appearance of redness and under-eye circles.

How To Use: Apply a pea-sized amount of eye cream to the outer corner of each eye. Gently pat the product in using the pinky or ring finger, gently patting over the eyelid and under eye area.
